A Lifetime in Business Leadership

Leighton Hull is an entrepreneur, franchise operator, and strategic advisor whose career reflects decades of building, leading, and improving complex business operations. Over the course of his career, Hull has owned and operated major franchise brands, including McDonald’s, Denny’s, Bojangles, and Shell, developing a reputation for operational discipline, strategic growth, and leadership within the franchise industry.

“Success doesn’t come overnight. It’s built one step, one decision, and one challenge at a time.”

“I’ve been the owner, the operator, and the advisor. It’s that real-world experience that helps me see not just what’s broken, but how to fix it.”

Hull’s entrepreneurial journey began with the launch of his first McDonald’s franchise in Los Angeles. From the beginning, he approached franchising not simply as an investor but as an operator deeply committed to operational excellence and service standards.

Hull’s restaurant was selected as an official McDonald’s franchisee training location, where he personally trained future operators and conducted multi-day operational evaluations for candidates entering the system. He later served on the Board of Directors of the McDonald’s Operators Association and chaired the organization’s Marketing Committee.

Over time Hull expanded his portfolio across multiple industries, including Denny’s restaurants, Shell service stations with integrated convenience retail, and real estate development. His restaurant operations continued to gain recognition within franchise systems for operational performance and leadership.

Hull later developed and operated Bojangles restaurants in Georgia. His first Bojangles location was selected as the system’s first nationally franchised training restaurant, further reflecting his commitment to operational standards and leadership within franchise systems.

Throughout his career Hull has served on numerous franchise association boards, including leadership roles within the McDonald’s, Denny’s, and Bojangles franchise systems. These experiences strengthened his perspective as both an operator and advisor, helping bridge the realities of day-to-day operations with broader strategic decision-making.

Hull is an alumnus of Indiana University, the Wharton School, and Harvard Business School.

Beyond the Work

Private Pilot

For Leighton, flying has always been more than transportation — it's freedom. As a licensed private pilot, he sometimes treats flying like others treat driving: grabbing lunch and taking off for a quick flight, or heading to a meeting a few hours away and still being home for dinner. The cockpit is both a place of focus and relaxation, where every takeoff is a reminder of discipline and perspective.

ASA-Certified Sailor

On the water, life slows down. Leighton is an ASA-certified sailor who treasures the rhythm of open seas. Some of his favorite memories are the simplest ones: a sunny afternoon on the ocean with friends, jazz playing in the background, barbecue on deck, and the steady pull of the wind filling the sails.

Performer at Heart

Before business became his stage, Leighton had starring roles in high school and college productions. For a time, he dreamed of life as an actor, but ultimately chose the surer path of entrepreneurship. The performer never left him, though - and that presence, timing, and sense of storytelling carry into every boardroom, fireside chat, and keynote.

“Legacy isn’t just what we leave in assets. It’s the strength, wisdom, and values we pass on.”
